The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 看的把我气得对空气乱打拳，跟算牌有什么关系？！欺骗我感情！！！《基赌山伯爵》罢了！ 真无语，但凡对德扑有点了解都不会这么装b吧……男主造型还是复制《东方的承诺》，看起来就是在牌桌上活不长的样子。朋友评价男主说得真好：isfj随便出门都能捡到个娃。 感情那么多，是没办法好好读人的。结尾扔下牌局跑去和长官互相折磨，对应了他无法参加WSOP的FT—heads up battle，winner takes all。讲个题外话，2021WSOP FT—HU阶段，美国业余选手乔治赢牌时，亲友团就大喊USA，对手那边亲友智囊团穿着黑Ｔ恤衫一群nerd样，结果最终bluff还是被德国职业选手阿德米尔抓诈了。 施拉德能不能做下海导演啊，这方面我是真的很认可。
#venezia78 这一代电影人曾用青春热血杀出一条新路，直到今天依然激励鼓舞着世界各地决心献身电影事业的人，而保罗•施拉德和马丁•斯科塞斯是走在前列挥舞着铁拳的领军人，有着男儿的阳刚与血性。但人终会老，他们肩上承担了太多责任感，曾经意气风发的抨击渐渐变为深深的痛心疾首与赎罪之情，本片仿佛背负着沉重的十字架前行，观众似与男主人公一起如伊桑•霍克般走向自我毁灭之路，过往不堪回首，明日不见曙光，唯有爱可以拯救。难得的从施暴者角度切入，不幸的是，其同时也是受害者，在他遇见另一个受害者的儿子时，伤疤被揭开。我们终将面对该面对的，无论过去还是自己（这也是本届很多电影的主题）。《后翼弃兵》明确I will entertain you，本片，I will tell you a story. 这就是不同。
好像没一幕亲历过，但是很多细节都能唤醒遥远的记忆。竟然现在美国还拍这么老派的片子，不知道IRR是怎么样的
导演试图通过此片来演绎津巴多在《路西法效應》一书中所揭示的“情景力量场域”及其阴暗心理，电影用相对软化的无限德州扑克赌局来替代伊拉克阿布葛拉伊布监狱中的那种场域，而男主角则是以一个耽溺于小赌养生的“创伤后自了汉”在被“唤醒”后一举卸下心防，克服魔障，自行判罚，剪除祸乱。

中间睡过去了，出来和同行朋友对了一下答案，发现没错过太多。就打分了，感觉确实是好睡了一些。
不是很喜欢，没有引人入胜的感觉反而越看越乏味

打过德扑的人都知道，算牌作为一种概率技艺，可以构成打牌整体策略，为长期盈利提供数学工具。但具体到某把牌，甚至某次比赛，某一天，某一个月，是否能赢钱都首先建基于运气，也就是偶然性之上。当代“神学”如果说还有什么是超验的，或许就是这种“偶然”，那种我们能从萨弗迪兄弟电影中大量感知到的混沌和不可预计性。而施拉德只能在老派的信仰体系里做得足够正统，在当代电影语汇显得足够正点。不过，这个电影最成功地方，当然是把赌博男人塑造如此帅，如此秀食可餐。
是我喜欢的电影风格，活泼，清新。颜控喜欢的电影。
